My work is essentially optimistic, whatever I am painting, the emotions I aim to evoke are hope and happiness. The trees of the countryside around my home, and the sense of time and belonging that watching them through the seasons brings, quietly inspire and uplift me, and I’m told these feelings are passed on in my work. I try to capture a sense of changing light when I paint, and enjoy the different effects, happy accidents and controlled corrosion of mixed media. I originally trained as a designer (BA hons Fashion, Central St Martins 1993) and the influence of my love of textiles can be seen in my use of colour, texture and pattern.
I’ve been painting my elegant, stylised individual trees since 2012, and exhibit them widely. My original tree and floral paintings are available from art galleries and at Art Fairs in the UK and in Europe, and I have shipped works to collectors as far afield as Japan, Australia and the Cayman Islands.
Drawing the human figure, trying to capture moments in time and shifting light is something that has always been Important to me. All my figure paintings are from life, I work in mixed media, using multi-layered combinations of collage, metal leaf and paint. The ‘Bodies’ that emerge from this process are sensuous, uniquely textured and dappled with pattern. I always work at the same level as the model rather than drawing from above, I think this gives a feeling of complicity between the viewer and the subject, and enhances the senses of freedom, comfort and femininity that I’m trying to convey.
I’ve been a member of the Hesketh Hubbard Art Society - the largest life drawing group in London, and I also run my own life drawing sessions in Hindhead, Surrey. There are more details on the Book A Life Drawing Session page.
In 2022 I was delighted to be accepted as a member of Surrey Hills Enterprises, and awarded their Trade Mark, ‘A mark of local provenance, quality and sustainability’.
The ‘stockists’ page has a complete and up to date list of the galleries that sell my original paintings, and I also have a range of affordable printed work in Whistlefish Galleries in SW England, and in various other UK outlets, including John Lewis.
